Disclaimer: For primary skin care, I do use Proactiv! I know that there’s a lot of controversy around it, but I have to say that I have been using it for 7 years and it has always worked for me. I would definitely recommend it for anyone struggling with severe acne!
With that being said, the products I’m listing here are products that have contributed to my skin journey, specifically in the areas of dark spots and moisture.

I started using Aloe Vera Gel after a friend recommended it to me about a year ago and I haven’t looked back– it’s now a must have in my skin care routine. Not only is it super light and gentle, I love how soft it makes my skin feel and how smooth it looks underneath my make-up. Some of its benefits include:
Moisturizing – I find Aloe Vera gel to be super hydrating! like I said, it’s super light, so it won’t leave your skin feeling greasy or heavy.
Reducing acne – I’ve noticed that I have not had as many break outs since I’ve started using it! According to prevention.com, it has salicylic acid in it, an exfoliant that helps to unclog pores!
Hyperpigmentation – This is the original reason I began using Aloe Vera and it has definitely worked for me! It’s a super natural way to reduce the appearance of dark spots!
It is the most natural and recommended to get Aloe from a plant, you can find them at Walmart and Home Depot for anywhere between $3-$10. The alternative is to buy a bottle at your local Target and Walmart.
2. Palmer’s Skin Success Anti-Dark Spot Fade Cream $5-$7
As you can probably tell by now I’m all about hyperpigmentation. It’s my biggest insecurity when it comes to my skin so I’m always looking for products that reduce the appearance of acne scars. In comparison to higher-end brands, I’ve noticed that Palmer’s Skin Success Anti-Dark Spot Fade Cream works about the same, if not better. Consumers typically see results in about 3-4 weeks!
It contains 2% Hydroquinone, an essential chemical for brightening the skin (as I’ve learned in my many years in research), Vitamin E, retinol, Vitamin C, and Alpha hydroxy fruit acids, which according to the Palmer’s website, helps with exfoliating dead skin.
3. Ayele and Co. Sunflower Serum $22
This is by far one of my favorite products ever! 10/10 recommend. I love Ayele and Co. because their products are 100% natural and cruelty free (not to mention that they are a Black-owned business!). Made with Vitamin E, Tea Tree oil, and turmeric oil root, this product is best known for:
- protection from sun damage
- repairing acne
- reducing hyperpigmentation
I can’t say I’ve seen a ton of results regarding hyperpigmentation, however I find that it’s super moisturizing and also makes my skin look amazing under my makeup. It’s also 100% safe to use on oily skin. If you check out their website, twitter, and instagram, you can see how well this product has worked for so many people! Some even claim it has been the only thing to save their skin.
4. Ayele and Co. Galore’s Garden 26$
Another Ayele and Co. product that I’m absolutely obsessed with! You guessed it… this product is amazing for hyperpigmentation and also 100% natural. I like to alternate between this and the Palmer’s Skin Success Fade Cream.
In addition, as opposed to the sunflower serum, this product is super light so I tend to use it in the mornings so my face looks fresh and glowy throughout the day!
This is definitely a summer must-have, especially if you struggle with even-skin tone!
5. Moroccan Magic Lip Balm 4$
Last but definitely not least, Moroccan Magic is my absolute favorite lip balm. I am not exaggerating when I say that it makes my lips feel like actual silk! I find it SO moisturizing, and it looks so good underneath my matte lipsticks!
The best part about this brand is that it’s not only woman-owned, but cruelty free and USDA certified organic! (information obtained from original website) You can find it at your local CVS, Bed Bath & Beyond, Whole Foods Markets, Walgreens, Stop & Shop, and now Target!!
Enjoy code TARGETMAGIC to get 15% off of their entire online store through August 1st here.
Some additional skin-care tips that have worked for me:
- Wearing makeup less
I stopped wearing makeup everyday about a year ago and it has done WONDERS for my skin. I only wear make-up on the weekends or for special events now. It’s also helped me save a lot of money!
- A healthier diet
Everyone has always said this and I honestly never believed them, but ever since I’ve started eating better– more veggies, less grease– I’ve noticed that breakouts are less, and when I start falling off, breakouts are more often!
- Moisturizing before bed
Preferably with my Sunflower Sweets Serum, whenever I moisturize before bed, my face is super glowy and my pores are minimized when I wake up, making me feel super confident to walk out the door makeup free!
